Relationship over religion

Read

“Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God… And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9, 11

Think

All of us are natural born sinners. We all battle the temptation to choose the wrong path in life. We all want to do our own thing. But when we choose our own path, we begin travelling a direction that leads away from the great things God has for us. And many people try to “earn” their way back to God. But we can’t earn it.

The great news, as we read today, is that it doesn’t matter what our “were” is. It doesn’t matter what we’ve done in the past, what path we’ve chosen to follow. A new direction is waiting for us when turn to Christ and pursue a relationship with Him! Remember, it’s not about religion; it’s about a relationship!

Pray

Thank God for the second chance that He has given you. If you are ready to accept a second chance through Jesus, follow this simple prayer, and discover your new life today!

Act

If you are ready to be washed, sanctified and justified, as today’s verse talks about, text “#YourName” to 32898 and let us know that you are ready to make that decision! If you’ve made that choice, share that truth with someone you know. And help them discover the path that leads to the kingdom of God.

Building bridges and drawing lines

Read

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1: 14

Think

In our world, it’s inevitable that we will encounter people whose beliefs and perspectives don’t align with God’s plan or purpose. As Christians, though, we are called to stand firm in our beliefs. So how do balance our call to ‘make disciples of all nations’ while remaining sensitive to a world filled with opposing viewpoints? How can we reach a world that sees differently than we do? It’s all about building bridges and drawing lines in the sand.

To reach people with the good news of Jesus, we must first extend the grace of God (build bridges) while remaining steadfast in the truth of God (drawing lines). When you meet someone who has a different perspective than you, don’t start by telling them they are wrong. Instead, see them as loved by God and extend the grace that God has extended to you. Then, rely on God to show you the time to draw the line.

Pray

As you encounter people who think, act and believe differently than you, pray for God to give you the wisdom and patience to reach them with His message and show them His love.

Act

On a piece of paper, write GRACE and TRUTH. Under each word, write a short list of ways you can extend that to the people in your life.

It’s the law

Read

“In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said, ‘You must not covet.’” Romans 7:7

Think

Have you ever found yourself thinking that religion is just a list of rules? If so, you’re not entirely wrong. As Pastor Ed has said, religion is a manmade system of do's and don’ts. If we aren’t careful, we can convince ourselves that following a certain list of rules is the path to salvation. The truth is, religion can’t save us. Only a relationship with God, through His Son Jesus, can save us. So why did God provide “the law”? Today’s Scripture shows us.

As you consider your life, remember that it is a relationship with Christ that saves you. But in order to even understand that we need that relationship, God provided us with His law. Don’t negate God’s commandments. Instead, allow them to point you to the one who can truly save you!

Pray

Thank God for His law. Thank Him for providing a way for you to see that you need a Savior. And then thank Him most of all for providing that Savior, Jesus Christ!

Act

The Ten Commandments are the basis of God’s law. Read them all the way through in Exodus 20. And realize just how much we are all in need of Jesus to save us!

It is not a job

Read

“God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” Ephesians 2:8-9

Think

In our world, we often look at our relationship with God like we would look at a job – as if it were works-based. We are told (and often believe) that we can earn God’s love by being “good” enough. Yet, the truth is that even on our best day, we fall miserably short of God’s standard.

God is holy. He is perfect. Because of that, there is nothing that we could ever do to meet that standard. The good news is that we don’t have to do it on our own! All other world religions, no matter what type, claim that we can earn our way to God, that we can work our way to Him. Christianity, though, makes the bold claim that God did the work to restore our relationship with Him. Because He did the work to open the road back to Him, that work is enough. We can rely on the free gift of salvation that is offered to us through Jesus Christ.

If you are trying to “earn” God’s love, stop trying. Instead, receive the free gift and thank Him for the salvation that is found in Jesus!

Pray

Thank God for His free gift of salvation. Admit to God if you have been trying to earn His love. Ask for His forgiveness for that effort. And simply stand in awe that He would do the work so you can have a relationship with Him.

Act

The greatest gift

Read

Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6

Think

There's a myth in today's world that says, "All religions basically teach the same thing." People erroneously believe that all roads lead to God. But the truth is that there is only one way to God. And that way is Jesus.

The biggest difference that separates Christianity from all other religions in the world is the fact that God did the work to save us. There is nothing we can do to earn our way to God; it is simply a gift from Him through His son, Jesus. Have you accepted that gift? Are you pointing others to it?

Pray

Thank God for providing the only way back to Him. If you've tried to earn your way to God, ask Him to forgive you for that. And pray for strength to help others discover that the only path back to God is through Jesus!

Act

Write this on a card and carry it with you as a reminder of the difference between Christianity and other religions: Religion is spelled "d-o"; Christianity is spelled "d-o-n-e"!
