A Position of Submission

Read

Ephesians 5:22-25, “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”

Think

The Bible says that houses built on rock will stand, but those built on sand are bound to fall. Jesus’ words regarding the wise and foolish builders are extremely relevant in today's crazy culture. Marriages with firm foundations understand an often misinterpreted word—a term God meant for good, yet it’s been demonized in recent years—submission. As Christ followers, we understand that submission, or rather humility in action, is an example of confidence in who and Whose we are in Christ.

The Apostle Paul often gets a bad rap for being a chauvinist. But if we believe in the inerrancy of God’s Word, then we support his writing in the proper context—not pretext. Ephesians 5:22-24 says wives are to submit to their husbands. This doesn’t mean women should  walk ten paces behind men with their heads bowed. No, they have strengths in which their husbands should submit to as well. As coheirs in Christ, men and women are equal in form, but unique in function. Paul also wrote for husbands to love their wives as Jesus loves the church! This implies honor, necessity, and an understanding of God’s wisdom. Successful families work because they are built on the Rock—that is Christ.

Pray

Thank God for the institution of marriage. Ask His Spirit to remind you of Christ’s humility on the cross. And pray for others struggling with the term submission, to gain an understanding of its importance in knowing Christ.

Act

Read Philippians 2:1-11 as a reminder of the biblical meaning of submission, humility, and obedience within God’s economy.

Uniquely Created

Read

"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male andfemale he created them." Genesis 1:27

Think

There’s a battle going on in our world that does its best to draw everyone in. It’s not a battle in some foreign land. It’s not a battle fought with bullets and bombs. This battle is one we call "the gender war." Our world tells us that men and women are on opposite sides. The cry for “gender equality” is a loud one. But the fact is, men and women were created differently, uniquely by our great God! Men and women are both created to be image bearers of God. In today’s verse, we read about the role they play and how they work together, not separately. Here’s the reality: men and women were not meant to COMPETE with one another. Rather, we were created to COMPLETE one another!

Pray

Thank God for making you uniquely you. Ask Him to help you see where you fit in His creative order and how you can use your gifts to be an example to the world for Him.

Act

Think about the difference between men and women. Those differences aren’t just physical. Remember that we aren’t created to be the same. We are created uniquely, individually, and on purpose.
