Going G.O.M.O.

Read

Revelation 3:15-16, "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of My mouth."

Think

Isn’t it amazing how many internet acronyms there are. One website listed 668! And not only do more keep cropping up, there’s even one for a new phobic phenomenon called FOMO, which stands for the ‘fear of missing out’. It’s defined as “an anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on social media”. Hmm… seems ridiculous, right? Wrong! It happens all the time; it’s an epidemic. Well, sometimes in our walk with Jesus we experience FOMO about what’s happening elsewhere. But what we need to do is forget about our FOMO and think GOMO, which means ‘God offers more opportunities’ than anything people are posting about on social media.

Yesterday we talked about the importance of leaving the past behind, growing more like Christ, and the necessity of staying on track with God’s plan. But once we’ve committed to our faith, we might be trekking right along when we encounter a new challenge that befalls all Christ followers somewhere along the way—spiritual lethargy. In fact, in today’s verse, Jesus is rebuking the church in Laodicea for being lukewarm. Surely He caught their attention with, “I’m about to spit you out of My mouth”. Yikes! However, the key word here is ‘about’, which leaves a small space for grace. It makes room for reigniting a passion for the gospel. Yet it’s also an imperative command meaning don’t wait, do it now! Are you taking a spiritual nap? Are you more concerned about what others are doing than you are for what God wants to do through you? Forget about missing the meaningless, and be mindful of all the amazing opportunities God has in store for your life.

Pray

Father God, I take to heart Jesus’ warning about being lukewarm. Make me hot! Reignite in me a new passion to be active in my faith and help me to treasure my relationship with You. I’m sorry for allowing myself to elevate my own interests and desires above Yours. And I thank You in advance for all of the amazing things I know You will do in and through my life.

Act

Check your spiritual temperature by asking yourself the following questions:
• Do I depend on God on a daily basis?
• Do I rarely share my faith because it makes me feel uncomfortable?
• Do I care more about being free from the penalty of sin than being saved?
• Do I live by faith or do I always prefer to play it safe?

Read

“Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Ephesians 5˸14

Think

So many people are wandering aimlessly through life. They have no direction, no purpose, and no hope. They have convinced themselves that their situation is dead, that there is no chance of revival, and no point in moving forward. But God has so much more in store for each of us!

No matter what your situation is, God can shine His power on your life. It often just takes a wakeup call. Use today’s verse as a wakeup call for your life. And discover the light God wants to shine onto you!

Pray

Thank God for His ability to reawaken any circumstance or situation. Ask Him to shine His light into your life as you turn to Him.

Act

Write down Ephesians 5˸14 on a card. Carry it with you throughout this week as a reminder that it’s time to WAKE UP to God’s call on your life!

Read

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1˸8

Think

Every wave has three common elements - weather, wind, and location. It's that second element that drives the wave toward the land; the wind is what drives the momentum of the wave forward.

When it comes to our lives, God has some serious waves in store for us. He wants us to experience the chills and thrills of riding giants. And when we accept the redemptive work that Jesus has done on our behalf, the Holy Spirit - God's "wind" - is immediately present in our lives, giving us the momentum and power to push forward in life.

Have you experienced the power of God's wind, the Holy Spirit? Are you tapping into the power and potential God's Spirit empowers you with?

Pray

Thank God for sending His Spirit into your life. Ask Him for the discernment and courage to follow the Holy Spirit, wherever it leads you in life.

Act

Read all of Acts 2 to get a full picture of the power and potential God's Holy Spirit can empower you with as you set the example and ride the waves in your life.

Read

“Then Jesus said to the centurion, ‘Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.’  And his servant was healed at that very hour.” Matthew 8:13

Think

Christ does not change our lives and then expect us to do nothing. He calls us to “Go!” and to do so in faith, in full assurance that He is in full control. We are to go, because we have been helped and healed ourselves. But in going, we must be intentional.
We are to go and share our faith and assurance with others – Matthew 28 Jesus commands that we do so. When you walk with faith into the world; when you display your posture of faith, those around you will ask what is different about you. When that happens, it’s not coincidental. Don’t hesitate in those moments; participate in God’s move and tell those people about your source of help, hope and healing…tell them about Jesus!

Pray

Ask for God’s favor today to provide you with supernatural opportunities to share His message. Ask for clarity and courage to invite others to experience Him as we start our new series “I’m Not ______Enough”.

Act

Be intentional about the way in which you invite people to church this weekend. When you invite, do so with prayer, considering the needs of each and every person in your life – family, friends, co-workers. And listen to God’s call to connect them with the local church, where they can hear about the ultimate source of healing!
